SB, Ideas Focus, p. 146 (sp. 5+5) Advantages and disadvantages of zoos (3+3) (The article below might help you)
Watch the video again and be ready to answer my questions
Zoos
I don’t
know exactly when the first zoos appeared. Unique animals were brought to
ancient Rome ,
kept and killed for entertainment. An elephant, a tiger and a polar bear were
given to the British king as a present in the 16th century. They
were kept in the Tower, the royal residence in those times. Later on more
animals appeared and they were taken to Regent’s Park – the current home of
London Zoo. Animals were kept in cages and shown for money in different
countries. As there was no photography and TV, it was the only chance to see
diverse animals from around the world.
Seeing
animals and observing their behaviour is one of the reasons for keeping them in
zoos today. We can’t help admiring graceful cheetahs, funny monkeys, clumsy
hippos and proud lions. Zoos can help people become interested in animals which
can lead to the promotion of conservation. However, a lot of animals are not
likely to show their natural behaviour in captivity.
In my
opinion, it is better for wild animals to live in their natural environment
with an appropriate climate, access to appropriate food and shelter and with
populations being in balance because of interactions between predators and
prey. Unfortunately, such environments are increasingly threatened.
Rainforests, coral reefs and other habitats are being destroyed. Many animals
are hunted to extinction. One of the purposes of zoos is to preserve endangered
animals from becoming extinct and save rare species. Zoos have different
techniques to increase populations of endangered animals and look after
abandoned babies which would die without people’s help.
Zoos have
veterinarians who can help injured or sick animals which would die in the wild.
At the same time recent research indicates that chimpanzees and other animals
know about “healing” plants that help them survive injuries. They are often
unavailable in zoos and a sick animal may die.
Good zoos
provide a balanced diet which helps animals to be as healthy as possible. Unfortunately,
as often as not it differs from their natural diet and if an animal is going to
be released, it can be very difficult if not impossible to train the animal to
find food by itself. Some animals become accustomed to feeding times and are
inactive between meals, so they may become overweight. In the wild animals have
a potentially more varied diet.
Animals’
mental health is a relatively recent field of interest. Research shows that
some species do not adapt well to captivity and suffer from stresses. Polar
bears seem to be prone to these problems.
Generally
speaking, animals live longer in captivity than in the wild as they are taken
care of. But they don’t need care, they need freedom. They need open spaces
where they can move freely and get exercise they need.
As for
ecological parks, they differ from zoos. They are large or small areas with
fauna and flora typical of that region. Animals live in their natural habitats
and are protected there.
I believe
zoos should be under control of an international committee. If animals are
mistreated and kept to entertain ignorant people whatever the cost to the
miserable inhabitants, the zoos should be closed and animals taken to good
zoos.
I am sure
there should be international standards that zoos must comply with. Firstly,
animals shouldn’t be taken from their natural habitats unless they are injured,
ill or need protection from predators and poachers. Zoos may keep animals which
were born in captivity and wouldn’t be able to survive by themselves.
Secondly,
zoos should create ecosystems animals are used to, while giving animals
appropriate food and medicines. Visitors should be taught how to behave in a
zoo.
But even if
conditions are most favourable, it’s cruel and unjust to keep living beings in
captivity. And I often ask myself: will future generations look back upon our
own generation as barbaric because of our treatment of zoo animals?
Hunting
Like all
living beings on the Earth, people are part of nature and depend on it greatly
even though they think they are in control of our planet. They have always believed
that whatever we did, the Earth would remain the same. People have polluted
air, water, land, killed animals for meat, skin, fur, tusks, horns or just for
fun, picked flowers and cut forests. The results of human activities are
disastrous. They disrupt the balance of nature and biological diversity – the
variety among living organisms. The total number of species is not known. As
species become extinct, they in turn take with them more of nature’s wealth.
The removal of a single species, no matter how tiny, can set off a chain
reaction affecting many others. It has been estimated, for example, that a
disappearing plant can take with it up to 30 other species, including insects,
higher animals and even other plants. Each species no matter how small plays an
essential role in maintaining the balance of nature.
In ancient
times people hunted wild animals for food because their survival depended on
it. But today it is unnecessary. I do not agree with the killing of any animal
for sport. It is awful. Who are we to say how long it should live or when it
has to die? A British journalist wrote about hunting: “It’s inhumane and bloody
destruction of a living creature by idiots in fancy dress who pretend it’s
sport”.
You must be
very cruel and merciless to kill an animal or a bird.
I do not
agree with keeping wild animals such as chimpanzees, parrots, pythons and
others as pets. Animals kept in a small house or cage cannot get the exercise
they need. It is also difficult to give them the same food as they eat in the
wild. If the animals were brought from another country or continent, the
climate may be unsuitable. Besides, many wild animals are dangerous and may
suddenly attack their owners. Some people say that they look after the animals
and give them protection. However, wild animals don’t want their love and
protection – they want freedom. They need to live a natural life in their
natural habitat, and they need open spaces where they can move freely.
For the
same reasons it is completely wrong to keep animals in zoos. It would be better
to save and protect the animals’ natural habitats. However, there are zoos
where animals that wouldn’t be able to survive in the wild are kept.
I think
more wildlife reserves and sanctuaries should be created. Mankind has driven a
lot of species to extinction. Nature is under threat now. We have a moral duty
to save the wildlife on our planet.
